CAR license plates were sold at an average price of 22,173 yuan (US$3,601) in a government-run online auction that ended at 3 p.m. yesterday.
Among them, 12 bidders got license plates at the starting price of 10,000 yuan.
Though the bidding results will be announced in three days, statistics showed all the applicants participating in the auction got their license plates through auctions.
The authorities provided 4,445 license plates, including 533 for corporate applicants and 3,912 for individuals.
"The average price for individuals was 22,173 yuan, for corporate applicants it was 33,240 yuan, and 12 people got their license plates at the minimum price of 10,000 yuan," said Ye Xinming, chairman with Shenzhen United Property and Share Rights Exchange. The lowest price for corporate applicants was 10,100 yuan.
The next auction will be held March 26 and authorities said they will set a ceiling for the amount that can be paid, which will be no more than double the average price paid in the first auction.
Bidders who have successfully received license plates need to pay the money they bid to designated accounts within three days.
Shenzhen is the seventh city in China that has implemented car purchase restrictions through lotteries or auctions.
Beijing and Guiyang in Guizhou Province adopted lotteries, while Shanghai, Tianjin and Hangzhou adopted auctions.
