SHENZHEN Port saw a throughput of 16.828 million TEUs (twentyfoot equivalent units) in the first 11 months of this year, up 13.8 percent from the same period last year, a spokesman for the Shenzhen Municipal Communications Bureau said yesterday.
The throughput of the first 11 months is higher than the total of the year 2005, 16.19 million TEUs, according to the spokesman.
The bureau expects the port, the fourth-biggest container terminal in the world, to expand its throughput to 26 million TEUs by 2010 and to 38 million TEUs by 2020.
The number of container berths, meanwhile, will grow to 48 by 2010 and 67 by 2020, up from the current 27, the bureau estimates.
Due to increasing demand for port capacity, the communications bureau has asked the Transportation Plan and Research Institute of the Ministry of Communications to revise the city’s port development plan made in 1998.
