A LIST of 15 overseas experts who have been the most influential in China"s growth in the past 30 years will be unveiled at a two-day talent fair in Shenzhen, which starts Friday.
The 2008 Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP), to be held at the Convention and Exhibition Center, will make the announcement Saturday at the subvenue, Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel.
The 15 foreign professionals, selected by the Chinese Government, have made distinguished contributions to the country"s progress since it adopted the opening-up and reform policy. They have been involved in public health, construction, management, training and education, media and farming, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, which is the fair initiator, said Thursday.
Among the talent are Dutchman Henk Bekedam, the World Health Organization"s China representative, Dutchman Hain Verbruggen, chairman of the International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission, German management professional Werner Gerich, Canadian economist Robert A. Mundell, John L. Thornton, a U.S. professor, and Moris Topaz, an Israeli doctor.
Others include German Susan Sabriya Tenberken, a training professional for the blind, Japanese politician Morihiko Hiramatsu, Japanese agriculturists Toyama Seiei and Hara Shoich, and New Zealander Edwin Charles Maher, a media staffer.
Three Chinese-Americans and a Hong Konger are also on the list, including engineer Pei Leoh-ming and physicists Lee Tsung-dao and Yang Chen-ning, as well as Ian Fok Chun-wan from Hong Kong, a management and training professional.
Thornton gave up his position as president of Goldman Sachs to become a professor at Qinghua University in Beijing five years ago. He had earned an annual salary of US$11.2 million at Goldman.
His course has become the most popular and influential one at the university.
The CIEP, the largest of its kind in China, will offer 30,000 vacanies.
Among the 5,000 Chinese exhibitors are a number of Shenzhen firms, including the OCT East, car maker BYD and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
The Shenzhen Daily will be the only local media with a booth at the fair to recruit Chinese and foreign professionals. The booth is No. 042 at Hall 1 of the Convention and Exhibition Center.(Jane Lai)
