Top 10 overseas-related events chosen
THE Shenzhen Daily and three government agencies have selected the 10 most important overseas-related events in the city in 2004.
The three agencies were the Shenzhen Municipal Information Office, Shenzhen Municipal Foreign and Overseas Affairs Office and the Shenzhen Municipal Trade and Industry Bureau.
Top of the list was a collection of four international activities including the Fifth China International Landscape and Floral Expo, the Sixth China International Hi-Tech Fair, the First Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair and the Bo"ao Forum for Asia World Logistics Conference 2004.
Second was Mayor Li Hongzhong"s visit to Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong to promote trade bringing positive results to the city.
In third place was the first import of duty-free goods from Hong Kong on Jan. 7 under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement signed between the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao. It also included agreements signed between Shenzhen agencies and their Hong Kong counterparts on investment and tourism cooperation.
Fourth was the sealing of sister city ties between Shenzhen and Gwangyang in South Korea. Nuremberg Culture Week was held in Shenzhen and the city government signed an MOU on cooperation with the City of London.
Fifthly, Shenzhen sought Hong Kong talents at job fairs there. More than 1,000 Hong Kong people signed agreements to work in Shenzhen.
Ranking sixth was the Speak . Shenzhen campaign, launched in June to encourage millions of Shenzhen people to learn foreign languages.
Seventh was the Shenzhen Daily joining the city government to hold the 2004 New Year Concert for expatriates, which was attended by more than 1,000 foreigners. The city"s foreign and overseas affairs office organized a Chinese New Year homestay program to help hundreds of foreigners celebrate the festival with local Chinese.
Listed eighth was the publication of an English version of the mayor"s government work report for the first time in the city. The version was translated by Shenzhen Daily staff.
A regular Shenzhen-Taipei flight launched by Air Macao was listed ninth along with a start on construction of the Western Corridor linking Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The final listing was the Shenzhen Great Wall Computer Group joined IBM to make Shenzhen the world"s largest producing base of servers.
