THE city"s environment commission unveiled 10 exemplary low-carbon practices for companies, schools and communities at a ceremony yesterday to observe World Environment Day, which fell on June 5.
The Shenzhen Institute of Building Research has a variety of environmentally friendly designs to reduce energy consumption. The 223 bus route has been equipped with 31 hybrid-powered buses and recycled water is used in cleaning buses. The OCT residential community has taken the lead in promoting a low-carbon concept among its residents. Huawei Technologies has long been devoted to developing an economical green telecommunication network.
The bureau began inviting public opinion on the city"s low-carbon model from early May.
"A green and low-carbon city requires not only government efforts but also public participation. It is a common responsibility to change our lifestyle and habits to become "green,"" said the city"s Executive Vice Mayor Lu Ruifeng at the ceremony.
At a ceremony for excellent performance in reducing waste discharge, 160 companies were given awards.
The commission has compiled a low-carbon guidebook to help citizens reduce carbon emissions in daily life.
Residents would also be invited to shoot digital videos or provide flashes about environmental protection and enter them in a competition, the commission said.
Shenzhen will host the annual conference of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in July, which would attract FEE members from 55 countries and regions to share the latest ideas on environmental education.
