FIFTEEN expats working in Shenzhen have been classified as high-level talents by the city government, the municipal human resources and social security bureau told a press conference yesterday.
The city government launched a series of preferential policies for talents in September 2008, promising life subsidies and research funds for people regarded as "high-level talents."
By the end of last month, the government had recognized 1,457 professionals as high-level talents. Fifteen of them are from the United States, Canada and Singapore, and nine are from Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The government has promised high subsidies for those awarded the title. An academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, for example, is entitled to a lump-sum housing subsidy of 2 million yuan (US$292,825) if he or she moves to Shenzhen.
So far the city has handed out housing subsidies amounting to 32.44 million yuan to high-level talents, according to the bureau.
High-level talents are selected professionals who have won prestigious awards, who have been leading major R&D programs, or other people who have made or could make important contributions to the city. The bureau set the latest standard for high-level talents at the press conference yesterday.
