SHENZHEN will designate 12 hospitals to provide medical services for the 2011 Universiade, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
The 12 hospitals include a medical service center at the Universiade Village in Longgang, a VIP hospital, media hospital and a hospital for infectious diseases.
The eight competition zones will have medical services available at nearby hospitals.
Lawrence D. Rink, chairman of the FISU Medical Committee, hopes Shenzhen will open a medical service hotline during the games.
He suggests using the city"s 120 first-aid hotline, but says the operators should be able to speak English.
The city"s 120 first-aid center now controls all ambulances.
Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital and Shenzhen No.2 People"s Hospital would be among the designated hospitals, according to Xie Ruosi, deputy inspector of the Municipal Commission of Health, Population and Family Planning.
Medical services will also be available at 63 Universiade venues and 27 designated hotels, said Zhu Tao of the organizing committee"s logistics department.
The games would have several emergency support measures in place, including a standby helicopter and a reserve of 500 voluntary blood donors, who could be summoned within eight hours, Zhu said.
The Universiade Village will stock Tamiflu, a bird flu drug, as a precaution.
The organizing committee will start inviting tenders for Universiade caterers, who will be required to have served at the Olympics or Asian Games, Zhu said.
