Girl rescued after 18-day ordeal
SHENZHEN police rescued a schoolgirl in Hunan 18 days after she was kidnapped on her way home from school, Chinese-language media reported Thursday.
The girl, 14, returned to Shenzhen at about 5 p.m. Oct. 3 by plane escorted by Shenzhen police.
In the early hours of Sept. 16, a man surnamed Xing reported to Yantian police that his daughter had been missing since about 10 p.m. the previous day on her way home from school.
At about 7 p.m. Sept. 17, a man called the girl"s mother saying he had the girl and demanded one million yuan (US$120,000) in ransom.
Shenzhen police established a special task force on the night of Sept. 17 to handle the case.
After detailed investigations and analysis, police pinpointed the kidnapping suspects in Hunan and sent a team there Sept. 23.
Under police guidance, the girl"s parents sent a sum of money to the account stipulated by the man.
The kidnapper used five places in Hunan, Hubei, and Beijing to withdraw 30,000 yuan from the account. He was finally caught at a railway station in Wuhan in Hubei Province Oct. 1.
The man, surnamed Mao, told police there were three accomplices and also told them where the girl was being held.
When Shenzhen police broke into an apartment in Lenshuijiang City in Hunan at about 3 p.m. Oct. 3, they found two suspects and the girl who had been forced to wear a hood for 18 days.
She had been forced to take sleeping pills while being transferred from one place to another, police said.
