Shenzhen has achieved a phased victory in its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 after a locally transmitted asymptomatic case was reported in Yantian District on May 21, a municipal health official said Thursday.
As of Wednesday, no new COVID-19 cases related to the Yantian case had been reported for 17 consecutive days since the last case was found June 6, said Chang Juping, the health commission’s deputy director. Chang made the remarks at a press conference held by the Information Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Government at the Civic Center in Futian District on Thursday.
“It can be judged that the outbreak has been effectively controlled in an incubation period, which lasts 14 days,” said Chang, adding that the risk of virus spread has basically been eliminated.
Additionally, 21 schools in Longgang District that had suspended classes have fully resumed classes and 34 of the 35 schools in Yantian District that had suspended classes have resumed classes. Yantian port also fully resumed operations Thursday. The city completed citywide nucleic acid testing Wednesday and the test results were all negative, according to Chang.
Li Xiaoning, executive deputy head of the Nanshan District Government, said that the district has implemented closed management on the housing compounds and residential buildings of the close contacts of a local confirmed COVID-19 case reported June 14.
The housing compound where the patient lives will proceed with closed management. If all the nucleic acid samples collected subsequently in the housing complex are negative, the lockdown will be lifted Monday, Li said.
Chen Fanhua, general manager of Shenzhen Airport Co. Ltd., said that from June 19 to Thursday, the daily average number of flights at the airport stood at about 320, accounting for about 40 percent of the daily number of flights at the beginning of this month.
Shenzhen airport has made corresponding adjustments in terms of international passenger flights. According to Chen, only specific international routes are operational and a whole-process closed-loop management is in place for inbound international passenger flights.
From June 19 to Wednesday, Shenzhen airport ensured the operation of about 100 cargo flights per day. Except for some adjustments, more than 90 percent of the cargo flights were operating normally, said Chen.
