ONE of the most famous fairy tale writers in China, Zheng Yuanjie, donated 10,000 books to the Shenzhen Book Donation and Exchange Center in Futian District on Sunday.
Most of the books Zheng donated were of popular fairy tales that he wrote. The books will go to rural village schools in Guangdong Province, Shenzhen Children"s Library president Song Wei said at the center"s opening ceremony Sunday. The center is the first of its kind in Guangdong.
Zheng is the founder and sole writer of a children"s literature magazine called "The King of Fairy Tales," which is also his nickname. Zheng"s popular tales include "Pipilu and Lu Xixi" and "Shuke and Beita."
The book center is the hub of a Shenzhen Children"s Library charity program that collects educational materials including books, stationary and computers for village schools in more than 10 of the province"s poorest areas, such as Heyuan and Shaoguan.
"We will jointly work with the city"s schools and Tencent Foundation, of Tencent Inc., to help raise funds and collect books," Song said.
The Tencent Foundation donated 300,000 yuan (US$48,000) for Sunday"s ceremony. More than 10 local primary schools, including Futian Primary School and Zhulin Primary School, have signed contracts with the center for future cooperation.
"I brought three scientific comic books to exchange and got book coupons worth 40 yuan. I used the coupons to get another scientific comic book and a cookbook," said Yu Kairong, a fourth-grader at Zhuoya Primary School. "It is very nice because I can not only get a lot of new books for my old books, but also help children in rural areas."
