SHENZHEN has set up an agency to promote brand-name enterprises and attract investment in domestic and international markets, Mayor Xu Zongheng said at the opening of the sixth session of the Fourth Shenzhen Municipal People"s Congress (MPC) yesterday.
The city will spend around 100 million yuan (US$14.62 million) to organize international promotions to attract investment and help local enterprises expand on domestic and international markets amid the global economic downturn.
Tackling the global financial crisis had become a heated topic at the MPC session, Xu said. Seizing the opportunity to readjust to the international economy and transform the service industry would enable Shenzhen to improve the competitiveness of local enterprises.
"Shenzhen will keep a close eye on the world"s top 500 enterprises and the large enterprise groups in China as well as import a number of modern industrial projects to strengthen industry foundation," said the mayor.
In addition, the city would achieve another breakthrough in city upgrading and renovation, Xu said. The government would quicken the pace of upgrading and renovating urban villages including Gangxia in Futian District and Dachong in Nanshan District. Shenzhen would also launch eight to 10 city renovation projects including the Huaqiangbei business area in Futian District.
Apart from these, other areas for development this year include building the city into a national innovative center, solving historical problems in the process of urbanizing rural areas, constructing waste water treatment facilities, upgrading rail transport, developing a mechanism for production safety, reforming higher education and transforming shareholding corporations in communities and villages.
