SHENZHEN has promised to build more than 20,000 makeshift flats for homeless quake victims in Sichuan Province.
The first 25-member team, including surveyors, construction engineers and builders, left for Deyang in Sichuan on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the Daily Sunshine said.
The city government has so far set aside 50 million yuan (US$7.15 million) in special funds for the required materials. The builders are being encouraged to work as fast they can.
The team will survey the areas where the flats are to be built, clear roads and contact Deyang agencies to make preparations for the project. "Once the main body of the task force arrives, the project will begin immediately," Lu Ruifeng, Shenzhen vice mayor in charge of construction, said Wednesday.
The official ordered the mission be treated as a priority for Shenzhen and implored the team members to do their best to help quake victims.
"This is the time to show our countrymen the devotion and professionalism of Shenzhen builders," he said.
Li Yilei, the only woman on the team, had earlier worked on the Metro Line 5 project. "I am from Chengdu and have worked in Deyang. I need to do something for my hometown," she said.
Meanwhile, authorities are enlisting corporate and individual volunteers for the task. Machinery and experienced technicians are needed, said a notice issued Monday.
"Companies and individuals who make great contributions to rebuilding the quake-hit areas will enjoy preferential policies in future public tenders for government-funded projects," promised Li Rongqiang, the local construction chief.
The builders will work in shifts as the work will be carried out around the clock. The first 10,000 flats, each with floor space of 20 square meters, will be completed by June 25.
