TEN doctors won the "Shenzhen Good Doctors" title at an award ceremony Friday night marking China"s first Medical Workers" Day, which was yesterday.
Another 10 doctors were nominated for the title, the first in the city"s history.
In a speech, Vice Mayor Wu Yihuan extended holiday greetings to the city"s medical workers and thanked medical workers who have made great contributions to the health of tens of millions of residents and played an important role in the city"s development.
A slew of activities were held across the city to mark the special day dedicated to medical workers. On Friday afternoon, Nanshan District commended 10 excellent physicians who work in the district. In Bao"an District, a themed event was launched to look for doctors with good reputations among the public.
According to official statistics, as of June 30, Shenzhen has boasted 34,015 practicing physicians and physician assistants. The ratio of physicians to people has increased to 2.72 per 1,000.
President Xi Jinping on Friday called on medical workers to carry forward the humanitarian spirit to save lives and make further contributions to improving the people"s health.
In his instruction, Xi expressed appreciation for the country"s medical workers" devoted and humanitarian spirits and their efforts to wholeheartedly serve the people"s health.
He also acknowledged their achievements in preventing and treating diseases, fostering medical talents and promoting scientific and technological development in this regard.
A great number of distinguished doctors have come out during this process, he said.
He also praised the courageous and selfless spirit that medical workers demonstrate while facing the serious threats of epidemics and natural disasters.
He said that designating Aug. 19 as Medical Workers" Day showed the CPC Central Committee"s attention to health-related work and its acknowledgment of the outstanding service of medical workers.
Xi urged Party committees, governments at all levels, and the entire society to care for and respect medical workers, and called on medical workers to serve the people wholeheartedly and promote the humanitarian spirit of saving lives.
China will provide its medical workers with higher salaries, better social welfare and safer working environments, according to an instruction issued earlier last week.
The instruction, jointly issued by the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said the measures aim to make medical workers feel more satisfied with their jobs and further improve the quality of the country"s medical services.
Other measures include protecting the right of medical workers to take vacations and caring more about their physical and mental health.
Related departments at all levels should carry out coordinated efforts to protect medical workers" rights and interests, the instruction stressed.
