SHENZHEN will invest 30 billion yuan (US$4.32 billion) in constructing the Shenzhen campus of Sun Yat-sen University over the next five years, the Guangzhou-based university"s president, Luo Jun, revealed at a global young scholars" forum in Shenzhen on Sunday.
The money will be used for construction of campus infrastructure, supporting facilities and teaching and research equipment. Work on Phase I is scheduled to start in June next year, including campus infrastructure, affordable housing for teaching staff, and affiliated kindergartens and primary and middle schools, Luo said.
Luo said that the Shenzhen campus is a key step in the university"s drive to make it world-class as agreed in a deal signed by the Shenzhen government and the university in November.
Upon completion, the Shenzhen campus will focus on medical studies and new engineering, and blaze a trail for integrating the two disciplines, according to Luo.
He said that there is a pressing demand for medical education and technology, disease control and prevention, and research and development of new drugs in Shenzhen.
In medical studies, the campus will emphasize preclinical and clinical medicine, and public hygiene that includes health policies and epidemiology, and will build a pharmacy school and three affiliated hospitals, which will complement the university"s main campus in Guangzhou.
In a pioneering reform that is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Education, Luo said that his university is planning to select the best of third-year science and engineering students to study at the medical school to pursue a Ph.D. degree, which will require another five or six years" study.
"In this way, the graduates will have both a good command of science and engineering, and medical science," he said.
In engineering, he said the Shenzhen campus will highlight thermal engineering, energy environmental engineering, new- energy science and engineering, R&D on high-end marine equipment and apparatuses, underwater technologies and engineering, undersea resources development technologies and engineering, unmanned aerial vehicles, satellite navigation application and micro-satellites, which will cater to the development blueprint of Shenzhen.
Founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary and the founding father of the Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen University is consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in China. The school"s main campus, commonly referred to as the South Campus, is located in Haizhu District, Guangzhou, inheriting the campus of the former Lingnan University.
The university currently has four campuses, three in Guangzhou and one in Zhuhai. The latter is the largest of the four campuses.
