MORE than 12,000 passengers had crossed the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border using the Futian Checkpoint by the afternoon Thursday, the first day of operation after the new checkpoint opened Wednesday.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, the border crossing saw 7,584 inbound passengers and 4,833 outbound passengers, sources with the checkpoint said. Hong Kong residents accounted for 90 percent of the total.
To guarantee the smooth flow of traffic, border police started to guide passengers from 5:30 a.m. The number of passengers peaked between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
A Hong Kong resident surnamed Wong said he chose the checkpoint because it was convenient for him to travel from his Hong Kong home to the checkpoint, and also because of the hospitality shown by checkpoint staff. The checkpoint links the Kowloon-Canton Railway East Rail line on the Hong Kong side with Metro Line 4 on the Shenzhen side.
The new border crossing is capable of serving 250,000 travelers daily and has become the fifth border link between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint witnessed 9,000 travelers on its opening day July 1.
