12 expressway robbers nabbed
TWELVE suspects were detained for allegedly committing 14 robberies on an expressway in February, the Daily Sunshine reported Wednesday.
All the robberies happened on a section about two kilometers from Shiyan on the Airport-He"ao Expressway, the report said.
The suspects, most of them migrant workers, allegedly put spikes on the road to puncture the tires of vehicles they were following in a white van. When drivers had to stop to check their tires, the bandits would surround them, threatening them with guns, knives and hatchets to ask for money.
Police said the bandits often chose odd-number dates to commit robberies.
The former owner of the white van, Luo, a native of Shenzhen, said he sold the van to a man from Hunan Province, nicknamed "Bajie." This man was later confirmed to be one of the bandits. Luo said the man once told him that it was quite easy to make money on expressways.
Police captured the man and the rest of the suspects at a gambling house Feb. 23. (Mu Zi)
