ANOTHER 26 infant kidney stone cases were reported in Shenzhen yesterday, bringing the total number of tainted Sanlu milk powder victims to 45,the city"s health authorities said yesterday.
Eight were being treated in hospital.
Of the 45 infants,20 were in hospital, the Shenzhen Municipal Health Bureau said in a news release.
Around 1,689 kilograms of contaminated milk powder were removed from shelves in Shenzhen yesterday after CCTV reported that 69 brands of baby milk formula nationwide were found to have been tainted with the chemical melamine.
The city"s administration of industry and commerce checked 737 wet markets and supermarkets,as well as 1,292 privately owned businesses yesterday.
Some 5,933 kilograms were sealed in the past week after the Sanlu scandal was exposed Friday, the administration said.
On Tuesday, the Nanshan branch of the city"s industry and commerce administration found that the Sanlu company"s Shenzhen agent,Chenhe Food Industry Co. Ltd.,had sold 7 million yuan (US$1 million) worth of Sanlu milk powder in the city.
The company had recalled milk powder worth only 700,000 yuan by Tuesday and the administration had urged the company to set up centers in six districts to enable consumers to return milk powder for refunds. The locations would be publicized soon, the administration said.
In another development, the Shenzhen Consumer Council received 254 inquiries about milk powder yesterday morning and has encouraged residents to report suppliers of tainted milk powder.
Supermarkets in Shenzhen said this scandal would have a huge impact on domestic milk powder brands, but they also said there would be sufficient supplies of milk powder as sales of domestic brands accounted for only 20 to 30 percent of the overall market.
As many domestic milk powder brands have been taken off the shelves, many parents have resorted to buying imported milk powder which is almost double the prices of domestic brands.
More residents are bringing in foreign milk powder through Shenzhen"s checkpoints and the number of people traveling to Hong Kong to buy milk powder has increased significantly, city checkpoint authorities said Tuesday.
