When Liao Yaohua received a notice to join the fight against the pandemic, he was just about to have Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner with friends and relatives in Shenzhen, Shenzhen Evening News reported.
On Jan. 31, Chinese New Year’s Eve, Aimeite Science Park Building B at Luozu Community in Shiyan Subdistrict, Bao’an District was declared as a medium-risk area for COVID-19. The subdistrict immediately started mass nucleic acid testing.
Liao, a volunteer in Shiyan, gave up the opportunity to return to his hometown for this Spring Festival holiday as he learned from his experience that the sudden wave of COVID-19 cases needed volunteers, according to the report.
Nearly 1,000 volunteers heeded the call to join the fight against the pandemic overnight. Liao also held trainings for inexperienced volunteers.
The trainings included not only contents on how to provide services for citizens, but also on how volunteers could protect themselves.
“Whenever there is a need for volunteers, we will show up,” said Bie Yalin, a volunteer from Nanshan District. In order to serve the fight better, Bie decided to live in Shiyan Subdistrict and helped send medical workers back home after they finished their daily work.
Another two volunteers, Lin Tao and Han Xiaohua, have been helping at nucleic acid testing sites and community health centers for vaccine services. It is said that they didn’t even have the time to change out of their pajamas after learning about the call on Chinese New Year’s Eve.
