THE minimum wage in Shenzhen is expected to be raised by at least 10 percent from July 1, yesterday"s Daily Sunshine reported.
The details would be announced in June and the new wage standard would take effect July 1, Wang Min, director general of the city"s human resources and social security bureau, said Monday during the first session of the 5th Shenzhen Municipal People"s Congress.
The bureau has already submitted several schemes to the municipal government. "The city government will have the final say, but the minimum wage will be increased for sure this year," Wang said.
The bureau is also conducting research into the possibility of equalizing the minimum salaries inside and outside the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), but "it might face some difficulties," Wang said.
Shenzhen was one of the first cities in China to introduce a minimum wage. Since the minimum wage standard was announced in 1992, employee wages outside the SEZ have lagged behind because of the differences in economic environment between the two areas.
The city has increased the minimum wage by about 15 percent almost every year since 2005. The minimum wage inside the SEZ is now 1,000 yuan (US$146) per month, while it is just 900 yuan per month outside the zone.
The current minimum wage standard for first-tier cities in Guangdong Province is now 1,030 yuan a month.
