19 private hospitals warned
HEALTH authorities in Shenzhen gave 19 private hospitals a yellow warning after the hospitals were found to be of the worst quality of 46 Shenzhen hospitals.
An independent consultative agency, authorized by the Shenzhen Municipal Health Bureau, graded the 46 hospitals into five levels from A to E according to their performances in 2004.
All the 19 hospitals at Grade E were private hospitals and most of the hospitals at Grade D were private, according to a report based on the appraisal.
The bureau gave a yellow warning to the 19 hospitals. The heads of the hospitals will be removed if they are given a yellow warning for two consecutive years.
The Shenzhen People"s Hospital won the highest appraisal and the Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital was second. Both are public hospitals.
Most of the Grade A hospitals were public hospitals, which showed private hospitals lagged far behind public institutions, the report said.
The survey also shows customers were generally satisfied with the medical services, especially with bribery, or the "red envelopes" from patients to doctors being curbed.
However, the survey finds that customers were still not satisfied with the high medical costs.
The health bureau urged the hospitals to enhance quality control.
