South Chinas Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region reported 56 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases from 4 p.m. Sunday to 12 p.m. yesterday, local authorities said yesterday.
So far, the region has reported 99 confirmed local COVID-19 cases in the latest outbreak since Saturday. All the cases are registered in the city of Baise, with 88 in Debao County, according to a press briefing held by the regional health authorities in Debao County.
The Guangxi center for disease prevention and control has detected the Omicron variant in the specimens of two confirmed cases, and gene sequencing is underway.
Starting yesterday, Baise has enforced a citywide home quarantine amid the latest virus flare-up.
Also on Sunday, Hong Kong reported 342 new cases of COVID-19, according to data from the Center for Health Protection.
All the newly reported cases were local infections, of which 20 related to the Delta strain. There were another 300 cases preliminarily tested positive.
Director of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government Ronald Lam told a press briefing Sunday that over the past two weeks, 1,921 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.
Lam said there were multiple chains of transmission in Hong Kong and he expected the number of new infections to rise.
Over the past month, more than 3.5 million tests for COVID-19 were conducted territory-wide, Secretary for Food and Health of the HKSAR Government Sophia Chan said in her blog Sunday.
The HKSAR Government will adopt a more aggressive testing strategy to identify new infections as soon as possible in order to cut the transmission chains in the community, Chan said, urging people to reduce social activities and stay at home.
Taiwan reported 49 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, including two locally-transmitted infections and 47 imported ones, the island’s disease-monitoring agency said.
The agency also announced a three-week extension of the current Level-2 COVID-19 alert to Feb. 28. Under the extension, the agency did not adjust the mask mandate nor make any other adjustments to disease prevention measures.
