ALL 13 expressways in Shenzhen will be toll-free between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6, the city"s transportation authorities said this week.
Drivers will be given paper cards at all tollgates six hours before the start and end of the toll-free period. The cards will allow drivers to move through tolls without paying - or needing to stop and return the cards - after the toll-free period starts or ends.
Based on last year, transportation authorities expect peak outbound traffic on local expressways to occur between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Jan. 25, 26 and 27. The return traffic peak is expected to occur between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Feb. 5 and 6.
Local drivers heading to destinations including Heyuan, Meizhou, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangzhou are advised to use the new Boshen Expressway, which connects Boluo County in Huizhou with Shenzhen.
In addition, people driving to Dongguan and Guangzhou can take the newly opened Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway.
Drivers are also advised to download a mobile phone app called "" - or "Traffic in Hand" - to access updated information about expressway traffic. The Chinese-language app has no English-language function.
The long-distance bus station in Futian District expects to see more than 6,000 passengers on peak days during the festival, about 1,000 more than on ordinary days.
Travelers are advised to buy long-distance bus tickets as soon as possible. Online booking is available at www.96511.com.cn and www.sz95000.com.
China has exempted passenger cars with seven seats or fewer from expressway tolls on four major holidays since 2012.
According to Xinhua, China"s expressway tolls are among the highest in the world. Tolls work out to an average of about 1 yuan (US$0.16) for every 2 kilometers traveled.
