SHENZHEN travelers will be able to take high-speed trains to the northwestern city of Xi"an, a world-famous tourist attraction, starting Sept. 29-just in time for the upcoming National Day holiday.
A trip to the capital of Shaanxi Province, famous for its historical and cultural relics, will take just nine hours and 20 minutes, about 21 hours faster than regular trains, Shenzhen Railway Station spokespeople said Saturday.
The full fare for an economy-class seat from Shenzhen to Xi"an will be 891 yuan (US$141). A first-class seat to Xi"an will cost 1,404 yuan. An economy seat to Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, costs 730 yuan.
Train G822 will depart daily from Shenzhen at 9:15 a.m. and arrive in Xi"an at 6:35 p.m. Shenzhen North Railway Station will also begin operating high-speed trains to Zhengzhou on Sept. 29, departing at 11:37 a.m. and arriving at 6:43 p.m.
Most surveyed residents said the new fares were acceptable, even though the high-speed trip could be more expensive than discounted airfares to the same location.
Standard airfare for a three-hour flight to Xi"an is about 1,625 yuan, but fares sometimes drop to 800 or 900 yuan with discounts. A ticket on an overnight, regular train to Xi"an costs 438 yuan.
Some residents complained that offering just one train per day would not meet the demand. Tickets to Xi"an and Zhengzhou sold out in one day when online sales started Saturday.
Guangzhou Railway Group announced Saturday on its official microblog that it would resume offering sales of high-speed train tickets 12 days in advance. That will reverse a sudden change in ticket sales earlier this month that drew wide criticism from customers, when the company announced Sept. 16 that it would start offering high-speed tickets only five days in advance starting Saturday.
